FILTER CLEANING
Proper maintenance of your pool filter is essential, and while keeping it clean is a crucial part of pool care, the cartridge will eventually need replacing. Here’s how to determine whether your pool filter needs cleaning or if it’s time for a new one.

WHEN TO CLEAN THE POOL FILTER CARTRIDGE
You should clean the pool filter cartridge whenever the pressure gauge reads about 8 PSI (pounds per square inch) higher than the normal operating pressure. Additionally, it’s a good practice to clean the cartridge at least every six months. Maintaining a schedule can help ensure this task doesn’t get overlooked. If you notice any changes in water quality, it’s also a good idea to inspect the filter cartridge, as it may just need a thorough cleaning.

WHEN TO REPLACE A POOL FILTER CARTRIDGE

Cartridge lifespan can vary, typically lasting between 3 to 5 years. However, there are several indicators to watch for that signal it might be time for a replacement:

  • Changing Water Quality: If your pool water remains cloudy or green despite properly balancing the chemicals, check the filter cartridge. Over time, the fibers in the cartridge can wear down, allowing finer dirt and debris to pass through.

  • Increased Cleaning Frequency: If you find yourself needing to clean the cartridge more frequently, indicated by the pressure gauge rising above 8 PSI often, it’s likely time for a replacement. Keep track of when you last cleaned the cartridge to monitor how often it needs servicing. A good rule of thumb is that if it requires cleaning in half the time it used to, it’s time to replace it.

  • Damaged Filter: After each cleaning, inspect the cartridge for any tears or damage. A damaged filter won’t effectively remove debris, resulting in a dirty pool.

  • Check Filter Bands: Cartridge filters have horizontal bands to maintain the spacing of the pleats. If these bands are loose, missing, or falling off, it’s time to replace the filter.

WINTER POOL SERVICES
Maintaining your pool during the winter months offers numerous advantages, such as preventing potential issues, enjoying the sight of a sparkling clean pool during the dreary cold season, and getting your pool ready for swimming much faster when the season begins. If you’re uncertain about whether to close your pool or keep it maintained throughout the winter, reach out to Pool Lion. Our expertise allows us to determine whether it’s better for your pool to be closed or regularly serviced, ensuring it’s ready for swimming when warmer weather arrives.
